IS TEETH WHITENING EFFECTIVE FOR FLUOROSIS? | Westmont Dentist

Dentist Westmont IL

Fluorosis isn’t really a stain, per se. Those stubborn white or brown splotches on your teeth are evidence of an uneven layer of enamel. Because of it, your teeth don’t respond to whitening the same way as teeth with a single, even layer of enamel. If you have Fluorosis, you’ve probably researched every option at your disposal. Home whitening? The taste of baking soda isn’t your favorite. Whitening toothpaste or over-the-counter whitening kits? They may be making your Fluorosis even more noticeable.

So, you’ve stumbled into the rabbit hole of professional whitening and are wondering if there’s anything you can do to restore your teeth to an even tone. Thankfully, teeth whitening in Westmont is effective against Fluorosis when you choose KöR Ultra, a whitening option that we offer at our Illinois office. We also offer other cosmetic dentistry services that can both improve the appearance of teeth and protect them from pain and sensitivity.

HOW DOES BLEACHING LIFT STAINS FROM TEETH?

Most whitening kits come with some form of hydrogen peroxide gel. Hydrogen peroxide is able to infiltrate the enamel and break down surface stains on the dentin. Ideally, this process takes place over time, allowing more stains–deeper stains to be lifted through the oxidizing process.

KӧR whitening uses a cold gel treatment because Hydrogen peroxide breaks down faster (and turns more acidic) when it comes into contact with heat. Because it’s refrigerated, the whitening process can last for longer with fewer negative side effects.

Fluorosis Stains Don’t Work the Same Way as Other Stains

Unlike stains from wine, tea, coffee, and food, fluorosis stains aren’t surface-level discolorations. Fluorosis is a result of hypomineralization of the tooth enamel (where the enamel isn’t able to fully develop during childhood).

In other words, the stains aren’t the result of discoloration on the tooth itself, and so they don’t respond to whitening processes the same way as other stains.

MOST TEETH WHITENING ONLY WORKS ON MILD FLUOROSIS

Many whitening methods aren’t recommended for patients with Fluorosis because the whitening process dehydrates the tooth, making stains more visible against the ultra-white background of the dentin.

Our in-office and take-home kits are specifically designed for patients with Fluorosis, so they can finally see the results they’ve been looking for.

WE PERFORM TEETH WHITENING AND OTHER COSMETIC SERVICES

Not only do we offer powerful teeth whitening for the most stubborn stains, but we offer other cosmetic services that can help you reach your smile goals.

A popular second choice is dental veneers. Veneers are custom-made porcelain shells that are permanently glued to your teeth. They can reshape, re-color, and re-make your smile, and you won’t have to make repeated whitening appointments to maintain the changes.

We want to help you find the right option for your complete smile makeover. Whether it’s veneers, whitening, or dental bonds, we’ll work with you to create the smile you’ve been dreaming of.
