While many people use the terms “TMJ” and “TMD” interchangeably, this is a public misconception. TMJ is short for “temporomandibular joint” and refers to the sliding, hinge-like joint that connects the upper and lower jaw. The TMJ helps us facilitate translational and rotational movements of the lower jaw. This movement helps us chew, speak, and function daily.

On the contrary, “TMD” stands for temporomandibular joint dysfunction. Furthermore, TMD refers to the temporomandibular joint’s pain, discomfort, and irregularity.  Some symptoms of TMJ dysfunction include clicking or a popping jaw, difficulty chewing, and TMJ pain.

HOW IT WORKS

BEFORE

When evaluating your existing TMJ symptoms at an initial appointment at our Westmont dental office, Dr. Sana Ahmed or Dr. Juned Mohammed will take a closer look at your health history, alignment, and might even take digital impressions and x-rays.

DURING

Overall, TMJ treatment is highly individualized.  If he or she suspects TMD, our TMJ dentists will suggest starting with minimally invasive techniques, like TMJ exercises or a TMJ mouth guard. If alignment is the issue, orthodontic treatment (like virtually invisible aligners) might be a better course of action.

AFTER

We can help you find TMJ pain relief with routine dental checkups and self-monitoring. If not, we can refer you to a specialist.
