Teeth whitening has become an increasingly popular way to enhance your appearance and boost confidence — but it hasn’t always been so easy to achieve such dazzling results. Let’s look back at the captivating history of teeth whitening and explore how our modern understanding of oral hygiene has developed over time. From early dentistry practices in Ancient Egypt to state-of-the-art practices today, discover the secrets behind teeth whitening throughout history.
ANCIENT EGYPTIANS
In ancient Egypt, having white teeth held significant value, particularly among those of higher status. The Pharaohs were captivated by the idea of achieving a beautiful smile and developed their unique method for whitening teeth. They enhanced their dental aesthetics by concocting a special toothpaste from wine vinegar, pumice stone, and ground oxen hooves.
Interestingly, the ancient Egyptians employed a peculiar yet effective technique to keep their teeth clean and bright – the “chew stick.” This ingenious tool was a twig with a frayed end that people would rub against their teeth, essentially serving as an ancient toothbrush. Through these practices, we gain insight into the fascinating beauty routines and oral hygiene traditions of the time, showcasing the resourcefulness and ingenuity of the past.
VICTORIAN ERA EUROPE
During the Victorian era, teeth whitening methods were far from ideal. One way that Victorians whitened their teeth was by applying a paste composed of ground charcoal. Although this mixture did provide short-term whitening results, it had long-term consequences. Charcoal causes gum inflammation and often results in periodontal disease.
Bleaching was another option for achieving a pearly white smile. Oxalic acid has been used for this purpose since 1830. Other methods included diluted nitric acid, chloride of soda, or cyanide of potassium solutions. However, these solutions could be harmful to both teeth and surrounding tissue. The quest for white teeth in the Victorian era entailed risks and less-than-satisfactory outcomes.
